🕵️♂️ Who hides behind my mask?
All my life, I have worn a mask, and I no longer know who I am. My mask has been my best friend for a long time. Today, I no longer know how to take it off. I often hear this in my practice.
In our journey through life, many of us find ourselves wearing masks—metaphorical facades that obscure our true selves. These masks are not just physical; they are emotional and psychological defenses we adopt to navigate the complexities of relationships, work environments, and societal expectations. As a psychotherapist and professional coach, I have witnessed firsthand how deeply ingrained these masks can become, shaped by the pressures to conform or meet the expectations of others.
😷The mask hides the truth
Behind these masks lie our authentic emotions, vulnerabilities, and fears. We wear them to shield ourselves from judgment, criticism, and rejection, fearing that revealing our true selves might lead to exclusion or misunderstanding. This struggle resonates with Carl Jung’s concept of the Persona—the social mask we present to the world, distinct from our innermost self, which remains hidden and protected.
💪The courage to remove the mask
Choosing to remove these masks is a profound act of courage. It involves peeling away layers of self-protection and confronting deep-seated fears and insecurities. Donald Winnicott, a renowned psychoanalyst, emphasized the importance of this inner conflict between our False Self (the mask) and our True Self. He believed that navigating this tension is vital for our mental well-being and personal growth, as it allows us to integrate our authentic identity.
🌱Navigating identity crises
Erik Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development further illustrate this journey. Throughout life, individuals face identity crises—moments of existential questioning and self-exploration. Resolving these crises leads to the development of a cohesive identity and a sense of personal integrity. This process empowers individuals to live authentically, aligned with their core values and aspirations.
✨The light at the end of the tunnel
Embracing our True Self offers profound liberation and personal fulfillment. It is a journey towards self-acceptance, where we reclaim our agency to choose who we want to be and how we want to live. This journey is not linear; it involves periods of introspection, growth, and self-discovery, akin to Joseph Campbell’s concept of the Hero’s Journey—a transformative quest that leads to self-realisation and empowerment.
